I enjoyed this book, the story focuses on Mara and her child Terry and the underground world which has become home for humanity. "The Jolt" and subsequent spread of variant gas has left the surface uninhabitable. Terry starts school at the age of 7 and it is immediately clear that all is not what it seems when it's discovered all children have the same birthday. His mother Mara is part of the "Mothers" who are rebuilding humanity and are one of 3 powerful factions within the new world. Both their lives take a a drastic turn when Mara takes on a different role in the motherhood and Terry and his classmates discover they are indeed very different. The story i found a little confusing to start as part of the story is written in audio logs which fluctuate in regard to which time period they are set, i found i had to backtrack a couple of times but the logs and the main story soon balanced out and i was able to get into the flow of the book more. The characters were compelling, i was completely drawn in by Mara's story and the challenges she faced with her new role. In regard to Terry's story i had to keep reminding myself that he and his friends we just children although the story covers a significant span of their young lives, they really do face a lot of challenges. The book is in 2 parts and the second part is more focused on the children and what is going on on the surface, the action parts of this half are well written and engaging and i found i became completely engrossed as the story reached is final scenes. We have been left with quite a cliffhanger and i cant wait to read more about these characters story. I give the book 4 Stars.
