This Means War is a contemporary romance with a little suspense/action. The main characters are Elizabeth “Taylor” Lee, a new graduate looking for an internship and Alexander Stone, the charismatic CEO of a large publishing company.
The book begins with Taylor nervous about an interview for an internship in New York City. She immediately met Alexander Stone, the CEO of the company. She was surprised that he was doing the interviewing and reacted badly. He was trying to through an unexpected situation at a new hire to see how she would react. Surprisingly, Alexander hired Taylor to be his intern and their story began. The internship scenario was not very believable. Within a day Alex turns over his corporate credit card and complete autonomy for a huge project to her without any supervision what so ever. She even demands that he stay out of it. I have had numerous interns working for me and that would never have happened.
The storyline was good and had a lot of potential. I liked Alex’s character very much and thought he was very complex. Through most of the book, I did not like Taylor at all. She was abrasive, immature and mean, but thankfully, she got better toward the end. She had a lot to deal with, so being cautious was understandable, but sometimes, I wondered why she would say and do some of the things she did. Some of the dialogue could have been better.
Toward the end of the book, there was good chemistry between the characters, but it took a whole lot to get there. It seemed like the only time Taylor was into Alex was when she was drunk. He was interested in her the entire time and would go out of his way to be nice, even though she didn’t always deserve it.
