The Hunter Awakens By J.R. Roper is a young adult fantasy novel that takes the reader on a adventure along with the main characters, Ethan and his sister Destry.

A freak storm created by a sorcerer destroys thirteen-year-old Ethan’s home causing his mother to send him and his sister to their grandparents’ farm house for a few weeks. Both kids expect a boring time in the country, but soon they learn about a legend that has placed the entire family at the center of an ancient treasure hunt.

Soon both kids embark on an adventure filled with magic, witches, sorcerers, apprentices, ancient guardians and an very powerful and possibly deadly artifact.

Ethan always believed he was an average boy without any amazing abilities. He learns that he is not who he had always thought he was and that he is a part of a much bigger world. His character grows and matures into a brave young man.

Destry is an entertaining character who loves her brother. She is always looking for a challenge and an adventure and she is mostly fearless. She pulls her brother into a lot of situations that he wouldn’t have participated in without her encouragement. Loved the brother sister relationship in the book.

The secondary characters in the book are well written, especially their grandfather. Mel is another awesome character that I hope is featured more in the next books in the series. I also loved the dog.

The author reveals information a little at a time bringing the reader along with the characters to discover the secrets hidden on their farm. The beginning was slightly slow, but it picked up and the end was completely action packed. I’m looking forward to discovering what Ethan is going to do next.
