Review of Phoenix Freed by Elise Faber

Reviewed by Late Night Books and Reviews admin Char

Phoenix Freed is a great conclusion to the Phoenix Series.  This is a series and should be read in order.

In this installment, Daughtry, Cody, John and all of the other Rengalla have been living in the relatively peaceful aftermath of the events from the second book, Dark Phoenix.

This book introduces a new character, Alex, who becomes an integral part of the book and the plot.  Point of view flips between Alex and Daughtry giving readers a deeper look into the story.

Growing up in captivity, Alex had a difficult life, not trusting anyone and expecting the worst from people. She is extraordinarily powerful, strong, willful, stubborn and caring.  She longs for a family and to belong somewhere that matters, so joining the colony was a huge step for her.

Daughtry has been finally able to control her powers and settle into a life with Cody, her bonded.  She is restless and feels as if something is going to happen.  She is suddenly faced with a new person at the colony who can unlock her hidden memories and a powerful force rising within the Dalshie.  In the past books, Daughtry was such a strong character and the center of just about everything. In this book, she was a little more subdued and took a lesser role to Alex.

John had a larger role in this book and I was happy to see that. I really love his character. He is loyal, intelligent, gorgeous, cocky and strong.  He also has a huge caring side to him and we get to see that.  I wish we would have seen more of Cody in the book. He was in a lot of scenes, but I missed some of his normal sarcasm and wit.

The romance in the book was done well. I loved seeing the relationship between Daughtry and Cody grow into something awesome.  I also loved seeing another romance in the book. (Too much of a spoiler to mention names.)

There was lots of action and excitement in the story. More questions were raised and all of them were answered in the end.  This is a great series and I cannot wait to read the companion books.

4.5 stars
