Patrician by Lindsey Winsemius is the second book in the entertaining dystopian series about the world after the Great War. The world had changed dramatically, the population annihilated, City-states took control of different regions and the people were ruled with deadly control. Their lives were severely restricted to maintain the “balance.”

Patrician begins shortly after Reaper ended and centers on Lina, the best friend of Aerina, the heroine from the first book. The story also continues for Aerina and her Reaper, Marcus, which I love because their story and romance are awesome.

Lina, a Patrician, is in the ruling class in Alba. She is brilliant but very sheltered, having never left Alba. She is devastated by the loss of her brother, who had died saving the city from an attack by the Southern Empire. She blamed his death on Aerina and pushed her away, isolating herself from everyone except the intriguing gardener, Jay from a much lower caste.

Jay is an agent of the Southern Empire, hiding in Alba as a spy. He posed as a gardener for Lina’s family to discover the secret technology that Alba was hiding.

Lina takes a chance at a romance with her gardener, Jay, going against every social rule in Alba and risking becoming a social outcast. Jay charms secrets from Lina while he seduces her body and then takes her as his hostage, whisking her across the wilds of what was once the United States.

Lina and Jay are from two different worlds and are enemies, but they cannot fight their attraction to one another. Love the romance that grows throughout the book.

The characters in this book, especially Lina and Jay, grow and evolve into better people, overcoming challenges. I love the friendships between the characters and the bonds that were created even around adversity. Loved the villains in the book.

There is a lot of action in this book and the pace is exciting. The author does a great job of world building and providing information without taking away from the action and story. This was a very good book and I couldn’t put it down. I am really looking forward to reading the next one in the series. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
